Practices:

¨   All Tots (4, 5 & 6 year olds) and Bantams (7 & 8 year olds) will practice starting Tuesday, December 1, 2009 We will practice on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s for the remainder of the year from 6:15pm until 7:45pm @ Marlton Middle School in the All Purpose Room.
¨   All Midgets (9 & 10 year olds), Juniors (11 & 12 year olds), & Intermediates (13 & 14 year olds) will practice Monday, Tuesday & Thursday from 6:15pm until 7:45pm @ Cherokee High School in the Wrestling Room.

Meets:

¨   Roll Call/Start times for all meets will be announced the week before in practice. Directions to the away meets will be e-mailed and/or given out the week before in practice as well.

Equipment:

¨   Each wrestler will need headgear and wrestling shoes. We have tried to keep extras and have taken donations of this equipment so see one of the coaches if you cannot obtain it on your own. The shoe bank will be available at the Parent’s Meeting in November.

¨   Headgear is to be worn at practice at all times unless the coach instructs otherwise. Street shoes must be changed into wrestling shoes prior to stepping onto the mat. It is a hygiene issue. Please keep non-wrestlers off the mat prior to and during practice.
¨   Wrestlers should wear sweats or shorts with T-shirts or sweatshirts for practice. Singlets (which will be provided) are for matches only.
¨   A $35 deposit check will be required for each wrestler to be issued a singlet. At the end of the season, when the singlet is turned back in, the check will be returned uncashed.

Weigh-Ins

¨   Each wrestler will be weighed occassionally and those weigh-in nights will be announced. It is important to be at practice that night so that an accurate weight can be obtained. Dehydration to promote weight loss will not be tolerated at any age level.
¨   The goal of the program, and the Grapevine Wrestling League, is to match up wrestlers of a similar skill level, age and natural weight, so that they can compete with each other.

Hygiene:

¨   Immunization shots must be up to date.
¨   Fingernails must be trimmed and clean.
¨   NO JEWELRY.
¨   All wrestling gear should be washed and cleaned thoroughly after each practice and match.
¨   Wrestlers should not practice if they have any infections (ringworm, impetigo, molluscom, etc.), nor should they come to practice if they have any kind of stomach flu or virus. Please use your best judgment and think of the other wrestlers.
¨   Parents and wrestlers should be doing a skin check at least twice a week, looking for any kind of a marks, rash or pimple that doesn’t look right. The mats will be mopped every night before practice with an anti-biotic and anti-viral solution.

Team Rules:

¨   COME TO PRACTICE! Without practice, it will be extremely frustrating to the wrestler to be on the mat. All coaches have excellent wrestling knowledge so it is critical to the wrestlers advancement that they come to practice and pay close attention to the coaching staff.
¨   Make sure to arrive 10 minutes prior to the scheduled practice time to allow for shoe change and to help roll out the mats if you happen to be practicing at Marlton Middle.
¨   We will teach and expect good sportsmanship AT ALL TIMES. Wrestlers will treat each other and the coaching staff with respect. When we wrestle at someone else’s facility, parents are responsible for the behavior of their wrestlers and siblings. Dangerous horseplay and vandalism WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.
¨   Parents will be expected to display good sportsmanship at all times as well. It’s very, very important to remember that your son’s opponent wants to win the match JUST AS MUCH AS YOUR SON DOES. Outbursts against officials, opposing coaches or opposing wrestlers will not be tolerated. This is a sport that dates back to the Olympics in ancient Greece, not an alley fight.
¨   The last and most important team rule---We expect 100% effort & attention in everything we are working on, whether it is a basic move in practice or while wrestling a match. Anything worth doing is worth doing right. As coaches, we expect each wrestler to adopt this same attitude in school and at home.  A 100% effort in school and in the household, coupled with that effort in sports, makes for a better person in the long run.
¨   We have 30+ coaches. Basically a 4 to 1 wrestler to coach ratio. No other team in the league has that advantage. Please feel free to see the head coach of your age group, or contact me, at any time with a question or concern.
